Remote-access attacks are the current hacker scheme that is the popular method of entry to merchants using POS systems. I have been beating the drum of late regarding the daily epidemic of data breaches and it seems that the data security market made up of large ant-malware companies really doesn’t have an answer, or at least not the right answer.
Symantec claims that the solution is “a properly configured endpoint protection product” and that their product solution will, “allow you to minimize the attack surface”. That’s great and all and I believe that their product suite can certainly minimize the chances of a successful attack.
But… is that the answer? Is this enough? What do merchants need or want? Is the consumer satisfied with making a purchase with the possibility of an attack that has been minimized? Isn’t minimization a maybe?
The answers need to not just minimize risk… but eliminate them altogether. Protecting the endpoint is very important, but that is not enough. It will not stop against an insider with nefarious objectives. The risk against POS malware can be eliminated with the combination of endpoint protection AND enveloping all the data with unhackable encryption.
