The Epidemic Continues- U.S.P.S Breached: by Richard Blech

I continue to write about these almost daily occurrences of data breaches that are affecting our countries entire data infrastructure.

This time it is the U.S. Postal Service which is now part and parcel of the overall problem of what we are facing in this country with our sensitive data and digital identities. Here again, we just need to replay the record and the news report will be the same, just with a different entity that was hacked.

The pattern that we are seeing now from most of these data breaches is what has become a customary, reactionary after-the-fact afterthought. This of course is just too late and the damage is already done. No matter how much the breached victim plays it down the problem is never really resolved it. Just saying it will never happen again (until the time it happens again) or denying the data stolen was sensitive, the truth of the matter is, we may not feel the effects of this type of breach for months if even years.

Secure Channels Inc. Disrupts Technology With It’s PATENT

An Interview With Richard Blech and Robert Coleridge

By Deirdre Murphy

Technology -the application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes, especially in industry. Seems simple enough… until you are in a room with people who actually create innovative technology. The excitement at Secure Channels Inc. is all about the PATENT. Richard Blech CEO of Secured Channels Inc. is an innovator and entrepreneur. His primary business focus is on data security and technology and Robert Coleridge CTO of Secure Channels Inc. CEO Richard Blech Talks Security Breaches

From the GRC-Daily:

Epidemic of Security Breaches

“Banks are one of the most vulnerable and quite possibly the most sought-after targets for hackers worldwide. JP Morgan getting hacked is just another in the epidemic of security breaches that are occurring on an almost daily basis. Most risk analysts preach that securing the perimeter or endpoint is the most secure way to prevent breaches, but the hackers are winning handily against that lone barrier. Part of that reason is the fact that the most serious breaches come from within and not outside the perimeter.

The reality is that there is almost no way to prevent the intrusion and to avoid your data getting stolen. The answer is to secure your data with the highest level of encryption possible and render said stolen data completely useless to the thief. With unbreakable encryption wrapped around your data, the hacker is left with a bunch of useless bits and bytes,” commented Richard Blech, President and CEO of Secure Channels Inc.

Secure Channels Inc., has created a paradigm shift within the technology industry. Secure Channels Inc. is a cybersecurity firm leveraging robust, state-of-the-art patented encryption technologies and authentication solutions compatible with every type of data available today. Fostering innovative disruptive technologies while still being user defined has become a cornerstone for Secure Channels. Developing patented unique processes to harden encryption and envelop resources in such a way as to render the data unbreakable and useless to the hacker, leaving them with only bits and bytes. By using its Proximity Technologies and securing data through IoT Devices, Secure Channels will be delivering real time analytics, payment processing, and data collection to any mobile platform or device. Secure Channels provides impenetrable cybersecurity far in excess of any existing encryption systems available, you would have to go to the future to find such security and Secure Channels would already be there.

1,000 Businesses Hit By POS Malware (Again) by Richard Blech

And the beat goes on bada bing, bada boom!

Data Breach Today is reporting: http://www.databreachtoday.com/1000-businesses-hit-by-pos-malware-a-7230

” The Secret Service now estimates that more than 1,000 U.S. businesses have had their systems infected by Backoff, a new point-of-sale malware that has been linked to numerous remote-access attacks (see Emerging POS Attacks Target Small Merchants). ”

Data Breach Today : http://www.databreachtoday.com/1000-businesses-hit-by-pos-malware-a-7230

Remote-access attacks are the current hacker scheme that is the popular method of entry to merchants using POS systems. I have been beating the drum of late regarding the daily epidemic of data breaches and it seems that the data security market made up of large ant-malware companies really doesn’t have an answer, or at least not the right answer.

Symantec claims that the solution is “a properly configured endpoint protection product” and that their product solution will, “allow you to minimize the attack surface”. That’s great and all and I believe that their product suite can certainly minimize the chances of a successful attack.

But… is that the answer? Is this enough? What do merchants need or want? Is the consumer satisfied with making a purchase with the possibility of an attack that has been minimized? Isn’t minimization a maybe?

The answers need to not just minimize risk… but eliminate them altogether. Protecting the endpoint is very important, but that is not enough. It will not stop against an insider with nefarious objectives. The risk against POS malware can be eliminated with the combination of endpoint protection AND enveloping all the data with unhackable encryption. Then even the insider will only be left with useless data. That should be the goal. Secure Channels starts where AES 256 leaves off.

Are U.S. Banks Vulnerable? by Richard Blech

Bloomberg asks the question and the FBI is investigation:

http://www.bloomberg.com/video/jpmorgan-hack-how-vulnerable-are-banks-to-cyber-attack-A2cm3qbTRU2WhbTV9yJxOA.html

Answer: Very vulnerable. Banks are one of the most vulnerable and quite possibly the most sought after targets for hackers worldwide. Now Even GOODWILL Hacked! by Richard Blech

Goodwill Confirms Card Data Breach-Malware Attack Against Processor Affected 330 Stores.

Another day and another breach…Hackers have no boundaries and seek to exploit any and all possible victims whoever and wherever to get access to sensitive and private data. More than 10 percent of Goodwill’s 2,900 stores were infected by a malware for more than a year before being discovered through a forensics investigation. Seriously… again? Anyone else feeling like it is a cyber ground hog day?

Here we are again with a daily reporting of data breaches that are occurring as a regular and unfortunate part of consumer life. It has now become abundantly clear that the current point-of-sale (PoS) systems, both on the hardware and software side, are now vulnerable and a proven target of the hackers. Simply being PCI compliant is no longer sufficient. Data emanating from and transmitting through PoS systems needs to be secured with absolute certainty.

While end point or perimeter security should be deployed at every terminal to detect or remove an invasive malware, it will be necessary to add another layer of security by encrypting the data to the highest levels at both the hardware and software levels. That is right impenetrable! If, as in the case of this Goodwill breach, the malware gets through, the data that the hacker obtains will be completely useless to them.

Richard Blech on Data Demons

From the Orange County Register:

DATA DEMONS

Richard Blech, CEO of tech security specialists Secure Channels from Irvine, is (not surprisingly) worried about data theft:

“What keeps me up at night is knowing so much of our private sensitive and personal data is susceptible to being breached. The fact that there is a secondary market for stolen digital data means that this problem will not go away until industry leaders and the government make it a priority to protect our private data.”

Digital Security and the Supreme Court by Richard Blech

The recent Supreme Court ruling in Riley v. California has leveled the playing field between the analog and digital worlds. SCOTUS ruled that law enforcement need a warrant to search your cell phone: http://recode.net/2014/06/25/police-need-a-warrant-to-search-your-cellphone-supreme-court-says/

The Court does seem to get it. Data is valuable and protecting it in digital form is no different than a paper document that’s locked away in a vault. Cybercriminals will break the law to get to your data, and if they get it they can crush the business. Companies should be able to fully protect and preserve their data. As the sophistication and capabilities of today’s hackers continues to advance, so should the level of encryption that would be required to thwart those capabilities. This would not prevent law enforcement from properly acting, just as they do now by following due process, which means find probable cause and getting warrants.
